Seriously upset! I mean, for the love of god, Mr. Ford, 200$ for 50 ml?!
And that was the cheapest one I could find.
I don’t know how private these blends are, but unless Mr. Ford made them himself, there is no way I want to give that much money for 50 ml.
No matter how much I love this perfume.
I can’t even convince myself Profumum’s Ambre Aurea would be a justifiable purchase even though I go weak at the knees thinking of it (240$ for 100ml but the blend is 40% perfume).
Btw, is that normal? Going weak at the knees at the smell of particular perfume? Because Ambre Aurea isn’t the only one – but luckily there isn’t many of those around.
On to Black Violet.
It smells perfect to me.
It starts lightly citrusy-piney to me, the masculine accord but soon after that I get the sweet “pulpy” fruitiness, and the woods and I believe some resins too but the notes themselves are very misleading. There’s got to be more in there than what is enumerated (I guess everyone who smelled this came to the same conclusion) but I can’t figure out what.
I just love the way it smells. A lot.
I’ve been testing it for a whole week and I still have problems writing this review. Each time I try it, something new comes out. And it’s not the violet. 🙂
There are some florals in there, beside violet that is. And I hope it’s not my wishful thinking conjuring the violet feelings of this perfume (I hate being influenced but sometimes I can’t tell if it’s happening or not). Still, can’t say I smell anything violety, I just have the color in my head.
That middle stage, after the masculine accord of the beginning and before the one in the end, lasts quite a long time. And I lack words to describe it – a woody, lightly salty moss lightened by fruity sweetness.
And the woody masculine drydown is still discernible after 8 hours of wear.
But still, 200$?!
No matter how much I love it, I won’t be buying a bottle at that price (but if anyone can point me to a cheaper one, please do). 🙂

I really like this perfume, I've also been wearing it this week (Tom Ford is "in the air", everybody writes about his perfumes or makeup and I'm doing my "weeklong test drive" of the brand as well).If to look into the next size – 100ml, the price is sloightly better: $260. So, it's a strong candidate for a split (the next size is even better priced per ml but it's a HUGE bottle). I'll let you know if I come across the split and you do the same, please.

I agree, this pricepoint makes it a tough one to swallow. I was also shocked at the makeup color names that Gaia wrote about earlier in the week or last week. I guess I have been living under a rock, but I couldn't believe how vulgar some were!

Yes; Tom Ford's prices are just wrong. Deeply wrong. I dithered for months (years?) over Velvet Gardenia, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend that much — especially for a perfume that only achieved its full potential roughly one out of three wearings. It was something of a relief when it finally went out of production. But I still think about it. Often.

I would never pay $200 for 50 ml of perfume, not just because I realize what a huge markup it is, but because I could never use that much perfume in my lifetime no matter how much I liked it. That works out to $4/ml, which I would pay for a sample, but have you seen the latest prices on The Perfumed Court? Seems like everything is now at least $7-8/ml, and many higher. These prices have caused me to stop ordering samples from them. Bummer.

Doc Elly, I noticed the same thing about Perfumed Court and wondered how expensive the perfumes were getting if a sample on TPC is now usually 5-7$?I also stopped ordering, it seems so much money. And I do have access to niche perfumes here (not the newest ones though), so I don't think I'll be spending so much money on samples.And when there are Luckyscent sample bags, they always seem a much better value for money…

Ines, I haven't smelled Black Violet in a long time, but when I did, it reminded me of Sensuous Noir (the one in the purple bottle) — which can be had for much, much less! Give it a try.

I haven't swapped a bit of it! It is the small (30 ml) bottle, but still, it's a lot for me! Also, I haven't worn it in too long — I think I know my SOTD tomorrow….

lolBut I love it how this perfume community we have brings ideas to what to wear tomorrow (or try the next time you're in a perfumery).I read Perfume Shrine's post today and just had to try Bulgari Blv Notte – it smells good but also like a toned down version of Worth Courtesan. Which is good for quiet seduction. Courtesan is more in line with making guys lose focus and follow you around wherever you go.How did I end up in Courtesan?! 🙂
