I had coffee yesterday with some of Zagreb perfumistas. That is always cause for smelling more perfumes and as we met opposite Top (niche perfumery), of course I tried some perfumes prior to seeing them.
The things is, I am either too sensitive to those synthetic (white?) musks or the whole industry is going down the drain.
I sprayed two perfumes on my arms yesterday, Xerjoff Al Khatt and Byredo Mojave Ghost.
Honestly, I thought both were great and enjoyed smelling them. Al Khatt doesn’t really smell like a straight-in-the-nose oud but is rather easy and lovable and Mojave Ghost is cool, if I would describe it in one word.
The problem with both is that they end up in synthetic muskiness and are therefore completely unwearable for me.
I really can’t tell if I am too sensitive to those molecules but honestly, I don’t really care. I hate the fact that so many expensive perfumes end up smelling like that. Aside the fact that they are expensive, they really use some expensive ingredients so adding those synthetic musks is like a punch in the nose for me after enjoying the beginning. 😦
I just wish everyone would find some better alternative on how to keep perfumes lasting.

I know what you mean, but I think it’s only because you have and know so much. And from my own experience this feeling will only last until you meet something that you fall for 🙂 But yes, I do think with the ‘niche’ market growing at the pace it is, a lot of perfumes will be catering to mainstream tastes.

Unfortunately, when that musk is there, it’s the only thing I smell. 😦 So I’m not keeping my hopes up the situation will improve…

That’s what I was thinking. I’m leaning more and more toward all natural. The flaws in terms of longevity and projection are advantages for me–I like my perfume to stay close, and I’m OK with it fading away so that I can put on something else.

I agree with that. One of the reasons why I don’t mind naturals is that I don’t have to worry about over-applying as I don’t want my coworkers to not be able to breathe. 😉

I had this experience with Byredo Mink though I haven’t tried any of the later releases. And oh boy, that was what ruined Puredistance Opardu for me, though it mostly got rave reviews. So I think I may have the same problem as you. ;(

I’d say so as well. Yes, Byredo seems to be using that a lot. It’s also the note the ruined the whole Ormonde Jayne line for me. 😦

I want expensive perfumes to smell expensive. I do not know what exactly does it for me but I know when something smells like a cheap(er) mainstream. Musks do not bother me per se (as well as Iso E-Super) but I want to smell a lot more in a perfume for which I pay $3/ml.
