Last week I talked about my favorite perfume houses and this week I’ll talk about my favorite authors. Although this list might change every once in a while.
J.K. Rowling – Well, if you follow my blog, this can’t come as a surprise. 😉 I am a huge fan
of the Harry Potter series (I admit, I haven’t yet read any of the other novels she wrote). I find the world of HP so well written that I keep going back. Especially at times of stress.
Kresley Cole – She’s on top of my list of paranormal romance authors. She’s really good at what she writes and the steaminess of her scenes is undescribable (go read and see for yourself).
James Rollins – The list wouldn’t be right without mentioning the thrilling action packed novels that are in my opinion so much better than what Dan Brown writes. And the mysteries and legends that he can weave into the story at the same time making them believable is incredible.
Marija Jurić Zagorka – She is my favorite Croatian author and my first foray into the historical romance genre which she wrote in the first half of the 20th century. Her novels are still very popular and will probably remain so for many generations to come. The bad 
thing though, for some reasons her descendants won’t allow her novels to be translated into foreign languages so we, fans, need to wait for the requisite time before the novels are no longer copyrighted.
Jane Austen – As I am a huge romance fan, the list wouldn’t be complete without the original woman who started it all. Pride and Prejudice being of course my favorite (I admit pride is one my flaws).

I grew up with Rowling’s magical books, and so they will always have a special place in my heart, and I don’t think I can ever outgrow them. Sadly, though, I could never find it within myself to appreciate the Victorian novelists, including Jane Austen. Recently, I’ve mostly been reading books on Philosophy as part of my degree in university, but I’ve also enjoyed Eleanor Catton’s The Luminaries, which recently won a Man Booker prize.

Thank you for the new name, I’ll check E. Catton. 🙂 I think Jane Austen can be better appreciated from the female perspective – all those little barbs passing between women make me laugh so much when I’m reading her novels.

I LOVE her, especially Emma. At first, as a belligerent teenager I thought it was all so boring; just politeness and facade with no depth. But actually there is, and it is all so brilliantly handled.

I read several Reacher novels but then I stopped at some point as I didn’t want to read the same type of stuff. Will have to get back though…

Top five authors…hmm…E M Forster and Jane Austen are two for sure, then I am a bit stuck as I like specific books by authors rather than everything they write. In the contemporary sphere, I have loved most of Anita Shreve, Carol Shields, Anne Tyler etc, but they are not quite ‘favourite author’ status like those classics. Will have to think on! Maybe D H Lawrence, Evelyn Waugh or Thomas Hardy might even be contenders. And I might make a modern exception for Barbara Trapido.

Yes, sometimes it’s difficult to choose authors when you like just certain books they wrote. I had a bit of a problem choosing as well. And then, when I do my favorite romance authors, some are going to get another mention. 🙂
