This candy to be precise (PEZ):
Basically it’s a lightly sweet smell permeating the air close to blooming trees.
As my knowledge of trees and plants is somewhere around kindergarten level, I can’t tell you what trees those are, but my guess would be some wild/decorative kind of fruit trees. Whatever it is, the air is rather warm these days so the smell wafts around you as you walk and all you can do is breathe it in and smile as childhood memories beckon with a grin of their own.
I grew up with those candies and even though I still remember the smell, I don’t really need to as now my nephews are the ones who are growing up with them.
So, tell me, who else remembers PEZ candy (and the accompanying dispensers) from their childhoods? And their powdery fruity smell?
P.S. It just never occurred to me before now howΒ the smell of those candies was actually reminiscent of the smells in nature.
(I guess someone did a really good job with those aromas)

I had a PEZ dispenser collection once, although only one had no feet (i.e. a little bit more valuable)

I didn’t know that (about the feet).
I remember how it was all about having a dispenser others didn’t have. π

I don’t think I’ve ever tried or smelled that candy but I think I saw it.

Really?! π
I’m not sure about today but when I was a child, we ate those quite often. I see they are still around so I’m guessing children still enjoy them but I must say it doesn’t seem as often as when I was little.

They are still around and I still like them! I only know this because we buy my niece the ones in a Hello Kitty dispenser – what else?!
I wonder what it is in nature that has that same smell?

π I think I will have to choose the same dispenser when getting some for my boyfriend’s nieces. π
I wonder the same thing actually because there are many trees blooming all over Zagreb and they generally don’t smell like that. I wonder if it were some kind of cherry trees I was passing…?

Hi Ines,
I had a closely guarded and much loved Pez collection in the early 80s. I think they were Disney characters as I definitily had a Donald Duck and a Pluto. One of the sweet little bricks smelt ‘purple’ which I recall being kind of grape juice and zesty flavour, it made you suck in your cheeks and produce saliva!
I still love citrus zest, aldehydes and sharp notes so I guess I was in training with my Pez..

Yes! I remember Donald Duck and Pluto dispensers. π
I must say I don’t actually remember that zesty taste (basically I don’t remember taste but probably would if I tried them again).
Now I’ve said that, I can’t help but think how easily smells return us to our past. I know I am not the first to think that but I still find it wonderful. π

I didn’t love the candy much, but I LOVED the dispensers! I had a Darth Vader and an Easter Bunny. Now that I type that, it is a rather weird combination.

Ha, ha, ha, those are a bit weird when you consider them together. π You’re Darth Vader in bunny disguise or vice versa? π

My brother and I used to collect PEZ dispensers as a kid – what a wonderful throwback reference!

I’m so glad to learn (almost) everyone seems to remember that piece of childhood. π
