Ghosts of Perfume Past, Present and Future

Welcome to another Christmas-y blogfest! 🙂

Organized by Natalie of Another Perfume Blog with the name coming from Undina of Undina’s Looking Glass, bloggers will be posting their own thoughts on Ghost of Perfumes.

As we’re doing this right before Christmas and on the first day of winter, my thoughts naturally turned to smells and perfumes associated with this period.

I believe one of the first smells I ever associated with winter and the one I enjoy the most in this period, is the smell of snow in the air. Sometimes the air will smell of snow even though none will appear.
miris snijega
It might not really be the smell of snow, it could just be the crisp, cold air of bright winter but as days like that are hard to come by in Zagreb (the air is neither clear nor bright), on those rare occasions it smells like that – it reminds me of snow. The way air smelled in my childhood when it snowed or when we went skiing in the mountains. The one you breathe in as much as you can and the one that feels like it’s bringing health back into your body with every inhale.

If you know of a perfume that smells like that, I would very much like to know. I know one will eventually appear – it happened so far several times when I wished for a perfume to fit the idea I had in my head. This is the Ghost of Perfume from my past.
vanič
As for ghosts of present perfumes, I will be calling those forward before Christmas when I plan on doing vanilla crescents (that’s my free translation of the name of cookies) and again the meringues with cinnamon and almonds.

The warm scent of vanilla and spices will work its magic and I expect bring more calm into my life (and pleasure to my taste receptors). The perfumes that evoke such sweet and spicy things – Spiriteuese Double Vanille (review by Olfactoria), Piment et Chocolat, and basically any warm vanilla or warmy spicy oriental (some ideas would be welcome on this part as well). 😉

My future perfume ghosts still tease my mind.

Those are the perfumes I imagine when I read the notes and then when they come, they are not what I imagined. Not that they are bad, just not what I imagined.
boži kolači
The smell of Christmas trees, candles, mulled wine and cookies. As a perfume. All at once.

The dry smell of dirt and asphalt during summer in the city.

The green, wet smell of spring.

Ines, how graceful and perfectly pitched this pieced of yours is! I know exactly what you mean by the stilling and wonderful smell of snow in the air … it is a wondrous scent, you’re right. When I read your words, I think, Hmmm … maybe I do love snow after all, more than I thought. 🙂

Those vanilla crescents, by the way, are a very traditional Christmas cookie here in Pennsylvania. Both my mother and my mother-in-law used to make them.

    Merry Christmas, sweetling.

Thank you very muchh Suzanne. 🙂
Ha! I knew there had to be some love of snow in you – since you love outdoors so much, snow has to feature somewhere in there. 😉

The vanilla crescents turned out quite fine for my first try (although not as appealing on sight as those made by mothers and grandmothers). 😉

A merry Christmas to you and Mark! :-*

Demeter Snow – which I tried at a friend of Bloody Frida’s – smells like wet snow, pretty much. Then I haven’t tried those vanilla crescents, but am a huge fan of vanilla perfumes generally and enjoyed wearing Creed Sublime Vanille the other day.

      Undina, will do!
I wear Fille en A. as well as that one comes close to my idea of what I’d like. 🙂
Happy holidays to you too dear U!

You are very lucky that they keep making your fantasy perfumes into real perfumes! Maybe I should send you a list that you could “wish for” on my behalf. 😉 Are you still enjoying your Crime Exotique?

Natalie, I think it’s more the case that my idea has already been made but I haven’t discovered it yet.
That’s what happened with JAR’s Bolt of LIghtning – only I wish it hadn’t. 😉 Considering the price.
I’m enjoying UCE so much these days, there is a lingering bitter-milky? note that my nose gets stuck on and then I can’t enjoy it properly.

Lovely post; you make me want to smell the fragrances that you want to smell. 🙂

Christopher Brosius’s Walking In The Air is supposed to be the scent of snow. I can’t tell you whether it succeeds (I have a sample somewhere, but I fail to turn it up right now), but I wanted to suggest it.

I was going to suggest Parfumerie Generale’s Un Crime Exotique, until I saw Natalie’s comment and realized that you’d already posted about it last year. 🙂 To me, it smells _exactly_ like pfeffernusse cookies.

Martha, Waliking in the Air sounds promising! 🙂 As it’s the smell in the air I am looking for.

And unfortunately, UCE stopped working its magic for me. :S

I knew if I asked for suggestions, perfumistas would help! 🙂 Thank you for the suggestions.
Interesting how many times CB comes to mind woth his perfumes when a slightly different approach to perfumes is called for.
I think he’s underappreciated in the perfume community. At least, by me it seems.

Happy holidays to you and your family dear BF!

Lovely post! Ah, snow in the air… seems like it’s been so long since we’ve had snow, but you don’t forget that smell.

    I want those cookies.

      Thank you Mals! 🙂
I wanted a white Christmas, as we already had a lot of snow but instead of winter, we are having spring now. And it’s incredibly sunny outside today (and will be rather warm for this time of year).
Oh well, if I can’t have snow, at least there are cookies. 😉

I’m with Mals – I want those cookies! I would love to smell them (then eat them, of course).

I love the smell of the air when it snows, especially when walking in the woods. Mixed with conifers and wet earth, it’s a most heavenly scent.

    Merry Christmas!

JE, I am jealous! The smell you describe IS heavenly! Unfortunately, hard to come by here.
Well, at least we have you to enjoy it and describe it for us. 🙂

      Merry Christmas!
